Post Hurricane Sandy, NYC

I hope all are safe and well after the brutal Hurricane hit. Many of us lost power – electricity, heat, hot water. The City is slowly getting back to normal (although transit will take a while to be fully restored), while others in neighboring communities, Long Island, Rockaways Queens, Staten Island, Red Hook, parts of NJ continue to suffer great losses. Our hearts go out to them all.  A few photos here.

Today, Sunday, 4 November, Union Square Park.

Union Sq, Saturday, 3 Nov

Thank you to all the emergency workers from other States, still stabilizing our power networks here in lower Manhattan, and all volunteers and local responders.  At Union Square on the way to the Studio yesterday and today, I saw vehicles from Iowa, Missouri, Ohio, Georgia, Alabama, DC

Union Square, 29 October, ConEd vehicles lined up before the storm hit.

East 20th Gramercy Park, 2 lovely big tress down.

Richmond Hills, Queens, NY, a scene similar to others experienced throughout the boroughs.

We are also sorry to hear of damage in Chelsea to Art Galleries, and especially big losses at Printed Matter, with archives of many books that have water damage beyond repair.  Communities have banded together.  People have been volunteering time and organizing clothing and supply drives and getting them to the hardest hit areas.  It is heartwarming.  Let’s hope the help and supplies keep coming to those displaced who lost homes and loved ones.

The Studio is now up and running.  We will post December classes soon.

Spring Letterpress Workshops

We’ve had great Spring classes in session under Mindy Belloff’s guidance.  There has been so much renewed interest in hand set type – lot of metal set for poetry on Love (of course); New York themes: the Brooklyn Bridge and Staten Island Ferry; family quotes, a homage to a Phebe bird, and even a centuries old poem about a Linden Tree!  New Summer sessions will be posted soon . . .
