Letterpress in One Weekend! DIY Workshop, NYC

We had another wonderful weekend intensive.  Andrea came in from Oklahoma & Chris & Deborah traveled from Connecticut, to attend the class with Mindy Belloff.

Everyone learned how to set type and completed 4 projects: 2 note cards each in blind emboss and a small broadside of their favorite quotes:  Rumi, Winnie the Poo, and a Wedding Rhyme.

Our group print edition was a quote by Winston Churchill on Dogs, Cats & Pigs, set in metal Bodoni type and a nice variety of Wood Type.  What fun!

Starting off 2012

As usual, there is so much activity in the Studio, from DIY Letterpress Classes to Private Consults & Tutorials to Weddings, Business Cards & More!

Agnes & Mark had a rush, destination wedding in sunny Florida.  Mindy Belloff designed their lovely invitation sets with a coral & seahorse in the fonts they chose, a lovely cotton rag paper in 7″ square, and a soft salmon custom color.  The envelopes were lined with a white on white pattern, stamps to match.  It was very elegant!

Michael made a major career decision from Managing Partner of a law firm to his love and passion of Fine Woodworking.  We had to do a quick run of business cards and Mindy Belloff hand set the text in Caslon and printed them with a deep brown ink.  His website will be up soon & we can go to press with the next set of cards!

Welcome Zachary Noah into the world with his first set of Letterpress Stationery!  His Mama chose a bright, happy blue and a script font, which we printed on textured Arturo papers.  Next stationery set is for Cerys, whose Mom Meghan, is no stranger to the Studio!

We’re very excited about the newly formed Designer Bookbinders of America.  Mindy Belloff printed up the letterhead, envelopes and business cards to get things started.  We look forward to some awesome book projects in the coming year!

Gavin came to print his linocut & plates for endsheet of a book he will masterfully bind.  With Mindy’s guidance, they got a little playful and created very cool overlays of spirals – psychedelic dude!

Love was in the air this past Valentine’s Day with two beautiful hand set letterpress broadsides.  Julie & McColl were among the many students who are creating wonderful artworks.

Book Fair, Studio Visit, & DIY Intro Letterpress!

The PS1 MOMA Book Fair was a lot of fun and as usual, boasted a very hip crowd!  The Studio on the SQ artists exhibited a wonderful variety of artist’s books, broadsides, and stationery.

We had a nice visit from Martin, a typesetter and printer from Amsterdam.  Martin & Mindy compared Studio equipment, and talked about the differences between American & European measures and aesthetics!

In the Introduction to Letterpress workshop last week, our students, all new to printing and typesetting, created these great hand made note cards, both with ink and blind emboss with Mindy Belloff’s guidance.

Letterpress FUNdamentals! DIY

We had a great time learning letterpress printing in one day!  Everyone hand set type and learned to print on our vintage Uni III.  With Mindy’s guidance everyone printed a nice set of notecards + their favorite quote, AND a lovely class broadside edition…

The Making of Mary Goddard’s Declaration of Independence Reprint 1777 & 2009
