A Century of Art at the New York Public Library

This was the last weekend of the exhibition from the print & drawing collection up on the 3rd floor – fabulous. However, there is still time for you to see the NYPL’s exhibition showcasing 100 Years, in the main lobby gallery.

The highlight for me of the 250 objects were the Cunieforms 5,000 years old – amazing condition and unusual shapes and sizes, that you do not often see on display!

There was a handwritten page of Thomas Jefferson’s highlighting the word “MEN” in “all MEN are created equal,” artist’s books, and Thomas Edison’s phonograph among the many objects.

Don’t miss it (through March 4) if you’re in NYC!

Book Fair, Studio Visit, & DIY Intro Letterpress!

The PS1 MOMA Book Fair was a lot of fun and as usual, boasted a very hip crowd! The Studio on the SQ artists exhibited a wonderful variety of artist’s books, broadsides, and stationery.

We had a nice visit from Martin, a typesetter and printer from Amsterdam. Martin & Mindy compared Studio equipment, and talked about the differences between American & European measures and aesthetics!

In the Introduction to Letterpress workshop last week, our students, all new to printing and typesetting, created these great hand made note cards, both with ink and blind emboss with Mindy Belloff’s guidance.

Jen + Rob “do it themselves” Letterpress Wedding Invitations!

Jen & Rob decided to create their unique invitation sets in letterpress. They designed them, chose a lush, thick paper for printing, set oodles of type, and printed the main invitations, reply cards and envelopes one by one, with Mindy Belloff’s guidance during the entire process. Everything was printed beautifully on the Uni III at the Studio. The invitations are fabulous, set inside a silver folder with purple cards to match the custom ink. They are in the mail now and the guests will be wowed!

Private Letterpress Business Consult

Elisa came into NYC from Holland for a one-on-one tutorial in letterpress printing. She learned to set metal type and run the press, and also how to make plates from digital files. Elisa worked with Mindy Belloff to re-think her hand drawn and silkscreen greeting cards, and create cute, trendy cards in the print shop!
